I never liked Vibe though I use to buy the magazine it all the time. I think it had more to do my love of glossy, flashy ads and making collages. I used to make a lot of collages. That is what girls who haven’t turned 21 and can’t drink do in the their spare time.
I confess that I am not a big magazine reader, but Vibe really wasn’t that great of a magazine. Their interviews were mediocre though one or two good ones could be found sporadically throughout the years.
There was also the misfortune of having really ugly covers. Take this one that Gawker used to break the news of the magazine’s demise:
I don’t find Kanye West particularly attractive, but this photo makes him look like the guy that sometimes begs for change outside 7/11 down the street from my apartment. You can tell he was the type of homeless guy that used to dress so you couldn’t tell he was homeless, but one day he just said “fuck it” and embraced his fate.
So if I can say I will miss Vibe, it is purely for nostalgia alone. The good side of the magazine shutting down is that it makes my favorite scene in Office Space that much funnier.
